Man this one Just didn't want to leave the bench. In fact I still need to take it down and give it a final cleaning. So please forgive the dirty fretboard, bone dust and misc, but I just had to get this one strung up.

This is the five fan Bouchet. Carpathian spruce, rosewood B/S, mahogany neck, ebony bindinng and FB.The B/S are finished in KTM9 the top is my first attempt at french polish. I used a medium blonde.

When I first strung it up I was a bit disapointed. Not at all what I expected.Kind of anemic. Well within two hours of playing it is another animal completely. What will the coming months bring?

The basses are pretty strong, but not overbearing. I hope that they stay that way. The trebles are very mellow or very sparkly. They are quite dynamic. A huge color change can be had just by picking at different spots. This is normal but it seems really dramatic on this guitar. Overall the sound is very complex I'm really pleased with it. Kind of makes me afraid to play it in over the coming year.

Ronn,

Beautiful guitar. Your french polish looks amazing! My 1st attempt looked like the top of a tortilla.   Love the clean look of the self-bound body, and square slot ramps. Do you build with a forward neck angle, or flat, or?

The heel cap idea is not mine I must say. I stole it from somewhere. Not sure where.

The kerfed lining is spanish cedar and the solid linings are redwood.

Neck angle... Well before the back goes on I clamp it (the back) in place and with a straight edge along the neck, I pull the neck into the proper position to give me the correct height at the bridge. Through the sound hole I then mark the foot location on the back seam reinforcement. With the back off I cut the back seam reinforcement where marked and then glue on the back clamping everything in the predetermined position. This all takes place away from the solera.

Again not my idea I got this from Dave Schramm. He describes it in his online apprentice CD in which he builds a '37 Hauser. Excellent tutorial there BTW.

So the short answer is the neck is angled back. Not real sure how much, but not more than a couple of mm from the nut to the body.RCoates38877.4039814815

Nice Work Ron. I never judge the sound of the guitar for at least 24 hgours after stringing it up. Seems like the guitar fairy always pays a visit to the shop overnight and things change the next day.

I build in just a bit of fall away under E, A, and D strings from about the 9th fret on up. Other than that they are the same thickness everywhere and of course "flat".
